Fitness exercises done at home can be invaluable and very cheap compared with shelling out for a fitness club. The biggest obstacle is getting the incentive to start and keep it going. It’s all too easy to leave it until tomorrow. But for new Mums and anyone who is in need of a trimming up for the holidays, the best way to start is to get into a fitness regime at home.

There is equipment on the market which will help the cause, and these vary from the blow up ball, to the expensive electric fitness machine. The full range cover everything from floor mats upwards, but to start you may just want to do some limbering up excercses at home and then move on to greater things. Every morning there are ‘join in’ fitness classes on TV. The participants are invariably fabulously slim, very attractive and in perfect health. It may be just the incentive you need to get going.

But let’s go back to basics, and the simple skipping rope. This is one of the most effective tools in the home exercise fitness box. Skipping for 10 minutes every day is as good as a 4 mile jog, so experts say. So, imagine doing that every morning? By the end of the week you will have skipped the equivalent of 20 miles of jogging. Keeping it simple, there’s nothing wrong with stretches, touching toes and crunches. This is a strenuous exercise where you put your hands behind your head and bring your upper body up to touch your raised knees. It can be painful on the stomach muscles at first as you are putting a lot of strain on the abdominal muscles. It’s very good but one to take steadily and you must be careful not to overdo it, but it all comes for the cost of a floor mat. The addition to the floor mat is the big ball which can be put to a raft of uses and such a simple piece of equipment. You can do the crunch leaning over the ball, do press ups on it, or lift it repeatedly to give the arm muscles a spot of exercise. Eventually you may want to invest in a treadmill or a bicycle machine. Both are good for working out and if you have a large garage, then this is the ideal place to put it. You can nip out there, when all the family couch potatoes are watching TV, pop on the music player and spend an hour each evening working out. Joining a club a fitness club is undoubtedly the most social way to keep fit but there is a lot of merit in doing your exercises at home, and in some privacy. If you don’t feel comfortable doing your fitness exercises with a group who mostly fit into a size 10, then you could well be better off starting your fitness regime at home until such a time you can join the slimmer models and feel great about it.
